Frequently Asked Questions
Safe-t.net Basics
Q: How fast is
Safe-t.net, and will I get busy signals?
A: As fast as the law will allow,
and no. We use all 56K v.90 modems. Your speed will be as fast as your modem
& phone lines will allow. Our customer to modem ratio is very low, so it
is unlikely that you will ever get busy signals. If you do, please give us a call.
It's possible that your setting need to be adjusted.
Q: Do I get unlimited hours?
A: No.
With your $19.95 account, you get 300 hours of internet usage, with the freedom to get on &
offline as often as you want. This is NOT the same as maintaining a constant
connection to the Internet 24/7. That is a dedicated service, for which most ISP's
will charge $150.00 - $200.00 per month. We ask that you disconnect your computer
from ours when you're not actually using the service. "Using the service"
means surfing the web, not merely staying online and having your mail program check for
new mail every 15 minutes. The server will disconnect you if you are truly idle after 30
minutes. but we also reserve the right to disconnect anyone who unwittingly or
deliberately stays connected for over 6 hours at a time. Use of "pinging"
or other devices for simply maintaining a connection is not an acceptable use of your
account, and your service may be suspended or terminated. Please be respectful of
other users by not monopolizing a modem. This will help to ensure that no one will
get a busy signal. We want the best service possible for all of our customers!
Q: Can I get to newsgroups & chat rooms?
A: Safe-t.net offers a filtered
selection of up to 20,000 newsgroups. We do not offer access to most chat sites.
These areas can't be filtered effectively, and can actually be dangerous.
Young people are often tempted to give out personal information to strangers and your
email address is often added to junk mail lists when you frequent chat rooms.* There are
some sites that offer "Moderated" Chat rooms, and some of these have been made
available. (see http://www.thecoffeehouse.com/
) Instant messaging programs such as AOL Instant Messenger, and ICQ
Chat (ICQ being our favorite) work well with our service, and are much safer.
Q: Does Safe-t.net host domains?
A: Yes we do!
If you have a business or organization domain (www.yourcompany.com) we would be
happy to host it for you at an excellent rate. Are you setting up a domain for the
first time? We can take care of the registration process for you too! For
details on Virtual Domain packages and pricing, click HERE.
Q: How do I get my 10mb
of personal web space?
A: If you have a
regular account with us, we can give you up to 10mb (that's a lot!) of web space for
posting a personal website. All you have to do is email
us a message requesting that we open
your FREE web space. You will need to include your username & password. We
will open a space for you, and then email you with instructions on how to upload your site
to our server. You will need a WS-FTP program to upload it. This program
can be found on our latest software, or can be downloaded from the Internet for free. (go
to www.tucows.com )
Q: What is
my email address?
A: Your email address is made up of two things.
Your username, and your Internet
Service Provider (ISP) address (That's us).
It
would look something like this:
happy@safe-t.net
Q: What is my username &
password?
A: Your username and password identify
who you are when logging onto our server. This information lets our computer know
that you are one of our customers. Please keep this information safe and
secure. Once our server authenticates your username and password, you'll be logged
on!
Q: How do I get additional email
addresses?
A: Our standard account comes with up to 5 email
addresses. Your username automatically becomes your first email address. To
activate additional email addresses just go to our homepage http://www.safe-t.net
and click where it says "Click here to add email boxes" and fill out the online
form and submit it. After the new accounts are active, we will send you an email to
confirm your new accounts.
Q: Can I check my email if
I'm not at home?
A: Yes,
you can! What you will need to do is get to a computer that has local ISP
service. Then go to our homepage which is www.safe-t.com
and click on "Check Mail Here".
Please note that this service only enables you to read your mail. (Kind of like
calling the post office to have a clerk read your mail to you over the phone)
You will need your regular email program to download messages, and save them in your
computer.
Q: Is
there a way to check where my Computer Has Been on the Internet?
A: Yes,
you can! We have mad a link to a web page that will give you instructions on how
to do just that. Just click here and you will
automatically be taken to that page.
